Check Your Appliances Regularly!

We all have something in our homes or businesses that is capable of causing water damage. That is why it is important to always check these items and have the proper maintenance done each year according to professionals and the manufacturing guidelines. Here are some of the most common causes of water damage.
Sump Pump
This is usually the number one failure when dealing with flooding. It is important to check your sump pumps regularly to make sure they are working properly and not seized up. Also, it is best to have a backup battery sump pump for when there is no power. This will keep water from entering your home by hydrostatic pressure if the primary pump goes out or loses power.
Refrigerator
The defrost drain due to being clogged is one of the most common issues for flooding on a refrigerator. Also, check your water hookup lines and make sure they are not being pinched or leaking. Make sure your ice maker water supply lines are connected properly and not showing signs of a leak.
Dishwasher
Even though these appliances are a lifesaver, they do not last forever. Dishwashers only last between 10 and 15 years. You will need to pre-rinse, don’t overload, keep it clean, and do all of the proper maintenance of its components to get that kind of life out of a dishwasher.
Washing Machine
Never leave your home unattended with your washing machine running. Water pumps go out or hoses hooked to them get damaged causing leaking or flooding. Also, check your hoses for cracking. They should be replaced every 3 to 5 years. Be proactive versus reactive to prevent water damage.
Water Heater
Water heaters are a big contributor when it comes to flood damage in a home or business. They should have an annual inspection and be flushed out every 6 months to remove sediments. This will help with the longevity of the water heater. Most water heaters don’t last more than 10 to 12 years. Contact a professional to help you decide whether or not your water heater needs replaced.
Toilet
Make sure the water supply lines are not old and cracked. They will cause flooding when you least expect it. Try replacing any plastic waterlines with braided stainless steel. They last longer and are more durable. Check for leaks around the bowl and tank when you are cleaning to prevent any water damage from occurring.

Remember, it is always best to turn your water main off anytime you leave your home for an extended period of time or go on vacation. Flooding can have significant damage and cost to your home if you are not able to catch it quickly.
